What a year, 2020. 2021 – hardly any better. The coronavirus has brought culture to a standstill. For months, no concerts, no income. Time to think about many things. About a way out of the misery – about one's own life in general. Shaving is a particularly good way to reflect. That's why I shaved frequently in spring 2020. I let my hair grow instead – but that's another story. One of the best ideas I had was streaming concerts online. Not only did I have a goal to work toward again, I also learned a lot from it. Technically, for example. It took three weeks until I could send the first live stream from my new "broadcasting studio" into the airwaves. Which streaming software and how do you use it? How do you connect all the cables between the audio mixer, video mixer, three cameras, and the computer? How do I best set up the lighting, which lights do I need, which light modifiers? Is my internet upload speed sufficient? In the end, everything worked out. But it was also a musical challenge. With three concert streams a week to begin with, you need a lot of repertoire if you don't want to play the same thing over and over again. Themed concerts like "Music of Duke Ellington," "Music of Fats Waller," or "Creole Night" got me practicing. And finally, I had time to practice. I worked on many new pieces, composed and arranged them. After each stream, I listened to the entire show again – and I learned a lot that way, too. This CD, "I Get Ideas," contains a small selection of the songs that have accompanied and particularly occupied me over the past two years. Am I still playing online concerts as you read these lines? I don't know. A look at my website will answer that question. If so, let me know in the chat that you're there. But even more importantly: Support handcrafted live music. Go to the concerts taking place near you and show your appreciation to local and regional bands and artists. Musicians and promoters will thank you. And I will thank you even more! Thank you!
