Groovy interpretations and compositions ranging from rocking New Orleans piano, acoustic funk, and feather-light swing by two musicians who sought each other out and found each other. Two musicians with the sound of a full band, whose passionate joy in their music is written all over their faces and whose soul mate is reflected in every bar. For their first album together, "Air Force One"—the title symbolizes their first "takeoff" together—Jan Luley and Torsten "Teasy" Zwingenberger developed most of the songs and arrangements completely spontaneously during a live studio session; some of them even ended up as "first tracks" on this release.
AIR FORCE ONE is like a nighttime trip through the diverse music scene of the Crescent City, as the birthplace of jazz is also known. This special New Orleans sound runs like a common thread through this CD. Songs with diverse influences ranging from swinging jazz, New Orleans rhythm 'n' blues, and Creole rhythms combine to create a groovy mélange. Interpretations of songs like Allen Toussaint's "Get Out My Life Women" and "Keep On Gwine," made famous by James Booker, are juxtaposed with Luley's own compositions—some of which were created spontaneously in the studio. These include the driving, boogie-woogie-like title track "Air Force One," the deep, soulful piano blues-filled "Blues For A Red Cat," and the melodic, light-footed, funky "I'm Going Home."
Nowhere else in the world do so many musical contrasts converge in such a small space as in New Orleans. Only to discover that they aren't actually opposites at all, but rather a wonderfully diverse and inspiring coexistence. Just like on "Air Force One."
Press:
"Torsten Zwingenberger (drums) and Jan Luley (piano) listened attentively to each other as their "Air Force One" (Luleymusic 1715/Fenn) took off. The boogie-woogie duo's playful mood increasingly increases to a lightness that makes the listener believe the album was recorded in New Orleans and not in Germany." (hifi&records 1/2017)
