CROSSROADS - Piano pieces between blues, boogie woogie and groove

CROSSROADS grew out of my long-standing engagement with blues piano and the boogie-woogie tradition. I'm less interested in the stylistic surface than in what lies beneath: pulse, weight, timing.

Several of these blues piano pieces are clearly rooted in the boogie tradition – with driving bass lines and a left hand that doesn't accompany, but leads. The groove isn't an effect, but the foundation. It carries the piece, shapes its character, and determines whether the music truly breathes.

The right hand develops melodies that are rhythmically closely intertwined with the pulse of the left hand. Melody and accompaniment interlock. Nothing is added on top. Everything arises from the groove.

The compositions are fully notated and formally clearly structured. These are not sketches or mere stylistic references, but fully developed pieces with a distinctive voice. Here, blues is not a nostalgic gesture, but an attitude: clarity, directness, substance.

My exploration of African American roots – especially the piano tradition of New Orleans – has been a part of my life for many years. CROSSROADS is another step on this path.
